Full course description

Welcome to Cultivating Authentic Student-Teacher Relationships in Distance Learning. In this module, you will explore a foundation for every classroom, no matter the location: cultivating authentic relationships with students. In the physical classroom, this happens with greater frequency and with more natural interaction. You understand the importance of connecting with students, but how do you break down the barriers in an online environment? That is where this module begins. The module continues with strategies for welcoming students to a distance classroom and building your team year-round. Students can always learn more about each other, and team building activities promote better classroom engagement. Of course some students will want to opt out, so you will learn strategies to cue engagement. The module will end with a conversation about empathy and the differences between authentic and aesthetic care. Employing empathy requires being comfortable with vulnerability and taking emotional risks. You are modeling openness, and that can be scary, but students crave a leader who values their entire person. Finally, you will apply and extend your learning by submitting a written response that demonstrates your plan for building relationships in the distance learning environment.
